lift-pull hip throw

In Tsuri-komi-goshi (lift-pull hip throw), Tori breaks Uke’s balance forward by pulling his arms upward and forward. Then he positions his hip under Uke’s center of gravity and extends his legs. Uke is levered with the hip and thrown forward.

  • Maintain a secure, shoulder-width stance.
  • One hand lifts at the lapel, the other pulls at the sleeve.
  • Establish back-to-abdomen contact.
  • Throw Uke forward over the hip by lifting.
  • Continue the pull and push of the hands until Uke reaches the ground.

(lift-pull hip throw)

Technique description

In the right natural posture, Tori and Uke grapple. Tori steps back first with the right foot, then the left, pulling Uke towards him. He then stops and slightly presses Uke downwards. Pulled forward, Uke steps forward with his left foot, then right, maintaining his ground. As he leans forward, he starts to step back with his right foot, attempting to regain his original stable posture.

At this critical moment, Tori lessens the pulling action with both hands. As he pushes slightly with the left hand, Uke begins to straighten up and steps back with his right foot. When Ukeā€™s right foot passes behind his left, Tori steps his right foot inside the tip of Ukeā€™s right foot. Simultaneously, he changes the action of his left hand to an upward pull, lifting and pulling with the right hand. This prevents Uke from transferring weight onto his right foot, causing him to rise onto the tips of both feet and breaking his balance forward.

Next, Tori lowers his body and opens it to the right, pivoting on the tip of his right foot. He steps his left foot back inside Ukeā€™s left foot, turning his back towards Uke. Using both hands, he pulls Ukeā€™s body onto the back of his waist. At this juncture, Tori uses his right elbow to press against Ukeā€™s left armpit (or left side of the chest), pulling with the left hand to bring Ukeā€™s chest and abdomen tightly against the right side of his back. Tori then bends both knees, lowers his waist, and positions the back of his waist against the front of Ukeā€™s abdomen.

To execute the throw, Tori straightens both knees, lifting and pulling Uke upwards with both hands, and twisting to the left. Uke is then thrown in a large circle over Toriā€™s waist, landing in front of him.

Key points

At the instant uke’s right foot passes behind his left foot, tori lifts him forward with both hands and breaks his balance. It is crucial for tori to seize this moment without delay. If uke successfully shifts his weight onto that foot, tori will be unable to break his balance forward for the tsukuri.

Tori lowers his waist to get inside uke’s chest. He lifts and pulls upwards with the outside of the right upper arm (on the side of the little finger) against uke’s left armpit and left chest area. Simultaneously, he pulls towards the right side of his own chest with his left hand, ensuring uke is tight against the back of his waist and the right side of his back, with uke’s body positioned on the back of tori’s waist. Similar to yoko-guruma, tori’s buttocks do not protrude from uke’s side; rather, his body is parallel to uke’s and tightly against it.

Tori then straightens both knees and raises uke by scooping him up by his abdomen with the back of his waist, subsequently throwing him by twisting his body to the left.
